Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
