The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
