Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
