Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, without initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
