The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
