European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
